Ebola cases in Democratic Republic of Congo rise to 956

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have announced that the number of laboratory-confirmed cases of the Ebola virus has increased to 956, while 245 people have died.

A day earlier, Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba had reported 933 cases and the same number of fatalities as of now. According to him, 80 patients have recovered and been discharged from treatment centers for this highly contagious disease.

The current outbreak, declared on May 15, is caused by the Budibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, a rarer strain for which there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine. Most previous outbreaks have been caused by the Zaire variant of the virus, for which a vaccine is available.

This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in the African country. However, health authorities believe the virus had been circulating undetected for a period of time before the outbreak was officially declared.

According to the World Health Organization, the Ebola virus has caused over 15,000 deaths in Africa over the past 50 years, with mortality rates ranging from 25% to 90%.

The deadliest Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo occurred between 2018 and 2020, when nearly 2,300 people died out of about 3,500 reported cases. /CNA
