When Edi Rama became mayor of Tirana in the late 2000s, when the city was sad, gray, in need of color and above all the river Lana had to be cleaned by demolishing the illegal buildings that had been built there, someone started to feared for his physical safety. However, Rama already knew something about threats and violence. After months in which he contested in newspapers both parties that arose after the dictatorship – the Democratic (centre-right) and the Socialist – in 1997, some men nearly beat him to death in front of his house. Rama had no doubts about the leader (the then president Sali Berisha, head of the DP, whom he always denied) and after a short period in Paris to recover and do the things he liked (painting) , returned to Tirana. The socialist government called him to become the Minister of Culture in 1998 and in 2000 Rama was elected by 54% of the residents as the mayor of the Albanian capital.
