Coffee is one of the world's most beloved beverages, and for good reason. In addition to its delicious taste and energy boost, science shows that drinking it at the right time can multiply its health benefits.

A recent study published in the European Heart Journal examined coffee consumption patterns and their association with mortality and cardiovascular health in more than 42,000 adults in the US.

The results reported that those who drank coffee, whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, between 5 a.m. and noon, had a 16% lower risk of death from any cause and a 31% lower risk of heart disease, compared to those who did not drink coffee at all.

In contrast, drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening was not associated with the same benefits, indicating that the timing of consumption is particularly important.

One of the main points about drinking coffee in the morning is its relationship with cortisol, the stress hormone that wakes us up. Experts recommend drinking coffee about 1-3 hours after waking up, as this is the time when natural cortisol levels begin to decrease.

Caffeine can temporarily increase cortisol, but consuming it too early, when levels are already high, can cause jitters and a decrease in its perceived effectiveness. So coffee between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. seems ideal, according to the researchers. /CNA
