Untreated sleep apnea may double the risk of Parkinson's disease

A new study involving 11 million U.S. veterans finds that a person's chances of developing Parkinson's disease nearly double if they are diagnosed with sleep apnea but have not used a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device to help control it.

"Having untreated sleep apnea is not a guarantee that you will develop Parkinson's disease, but it significantly increases the chances," said study co-author Dr. Gregory Scott.

According to information provided by researchers, about one million Americans are currently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disease characterized by increasing disability.

The risk of the disease increases steadily after the age of 60.

In the new study, Scott and his colleagues examined the medical records of 11 million U.S. military veterans who received care from the VA between 1999 and 2022.

Even after adjusting for potential confounding conditions such as obesity, age and high blood pressure, the team found that untreated sleep apnea nearly doubled the odds of Parkinson's disease compared to people whose apnea was treated with CPAP.

Sleep apnea involves frequent breathing difficulties during sleep that can affect the amount of oxygen that goes to the brain.

He said the new findings are so compelling about a link between apnea and Parkinson's disease that he thinks it will change his practice.

Neilson noted that the new generation CPAP is easier to use and more effective than ever before./ CNA
