The holidays test our food resilience. However, by learning to avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities, we will enjoy these days without compromising our health.
Now that we are entering the festive season and the Christmas atmosphere, rich dishes, both savory and sweet, are slowly starting to take their place on our tables. However, the goal during these holidays is to relax and enjoy food and company without excess, so as not to increase our weight and health indicators.
Therefore, it is important to be careful about excessive consumption of "unhealthy" foods and drinks. On the other hand, we can benefit from the good ingredients that will give us foods more or less identified with Christmas, since we consume them more during these days compared to the rest of the year. So we avoid the pitfalls and take advantage of the opportunities of the holidays.
What to be careful of during the holidays with sweets and alcohol
Sweets: There is no doubt that the holidays are a time of great dietary temptation. Chocolates and many others are the sweet attractions of Christmas and one of the main reasons that our weight is threatened, but also our good health. However, for better or worse, they are present in the home during this period and, beyond the recommendation "pass and do not touch", it is important to know what and how to eat.
Alcohol: This period is also characterized by a significant increase in alcohol consumption. From the beginning of December with many name days to Christmas and New Year, when the holidays reach their peak, drinks are given and taken. However, special attention is needed, as the increase in alcohol consumption, in addition to the health problems it can cause, is also one of the main reasons for weight gain. Alcohol has calories, and lots of them. Regardless of the color of the drink, one gram of alcohol will give us 7 calories. These are certainly not the same for all drinks, but depend on their alcohol content.
Thus, there are some with low content such as beer (0-12%) and wine (around 12%) and others with higher content such as whiskey and vodka with over 40% alcohol content. Consequently, the most appropriate choice is that of low-content drinks such as wine. Also, what another drink contains plays an important role in its caloric index. Adding, for example, sugar, soda or juice certainly increases its calories. This is why it is preferable to drink as pure as possible or with the addition of light soda. /CNA
