Tea or coffee?/ Here's what to consume to increase well-being

Coffee and tea are perhaps the most popular beverages in the world. Starting with the latter, a large study that looked at about 1.3 million participants showed that moderate tea consumption (1.5 to 2 cups per day) is associated with reduced mortality from all causes and with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Another study from 2025 reported that black tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. These protective benefits do not increase if we drink more than 2 cups per day, in other words, don't expect to drink 10 cups of tea every day and live forever...

Coffee, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants, which help neutralize harmful free radicals that cause cancer in the body. By reducing oxidative stress, these antioxidants slow down the aging of cells and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Studies show that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

A study that reviewed 201 meta-analyses concluded that drinking 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day was associated with an approximately 17% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. Moderate consumption (2 to 4 cups per day) was associated with reduced cardiovascular disease mortality and a slower transition from prediabetes to diabetes. A recent review found that drinking up to 3 cups of coffee per day may extend life by about two years.

So, tea or coffee?

Both beverages are associated with positive health outcomes in various areas, but people with reflux, tachycardia, panic disorder, or poorly controlled hypertension may tolerate tea better than coffee.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on the individual, but some studies suggest that a combination of the two may offer broader protection against various diseases. However, the key is, as always, one: moderation! /CNA
