New study: Vitamin C immediately increases collagen production in the human body

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Otago has found that the skin's ability to produce collagen and rejuvenate itself is directly affected by the amount of vitamin C a person consumes.

According to findings published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the amount of vitamin C present in the skin closely reflects the level circulating in the blood (plasma). The researchers also found that these levels can be increased by increasing fruit consumption.

The study involved 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. Participants who consumed two vitamin C-rich kiwifruits daily experienced an increase in plasma vitamin C, which in turn increased the concentration of the vitamin in the skin. This change contributed to increased skin thickness (collagen production) and encouraged renewal and regeneration of the outer layers of the epidermis.

"We were surprised by the close correlation between vitamin C levels in plasma and skin, this was much stronger than in any other organ we investigated. We observed that vitamin C in the bloodstream penetrates all layers of the skin and is associated with improved skin function," says the study's lead author and professor Dr. Margreet Vissers.

The study included two phases. In the first phase, the correlation between plasma and skin vitamin C levels was determined, using samples of healthy skin tissue from patients undergoing planned surgical interventions./ CNA
