New stem cell treatment could reverse Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder caused primarily by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons.

Existing drugs aim to manage symptoms, but do not reverse the underlying mechanism, neuronal degeneration. To date, there is no definitive treatment that can "restore" the "lost" neurons.

The need for innovative treatments is urgent, and therefore any new approach that promises to regenerate neurons arouses great interest, but at the same time requires due care and evaluation.

Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have studied a pioneering approach in a Phase I clinical trial: transplanting stem cells into the brains of Parkinson's patients. The treatment aims to direct the injected stem cells to differentiate into nerve cells that exclusively produce dopamine.

Of the first six people treated, one patient reported a significant reduction in symptoms, his score on a disease rating scale dropping from 62 (a score considered severe) to 12, close to levels that mimic normal function.

Researchers claim to have achieved high conversion rates of stem cells into functional dopaminergic cells, over 80 percent, according to the statement. According to them, the new cells "implanted" in the brain, differentiated and "rebuilt" damaged neuronal networks./CNA
