New study: GPS data shows early signs of brain health problems

Every day, millions of people get behind the wheel for another routine journey and arrive at their destination without much thought. However, it only takes a moment of inattention or a slight movement while driving to turn everyday life into an emergency.

Older drivers are more vulnerable to such incidents, but few of them immediately admit they are facing difficulties and even fewer are willing to part with their keys. It usually takes repeated conversations with relatives and doctors to take the first step.

However, today, a new study published in Neurology shows that a small sensor attached to the car, like the simple GPS trackers we find on the market, can detect the first signs of cognitive decline much earlier, before they even appear during annual medical examinations.

Scientists from the University of Washington School of Medicine followed 298 elderly drivers for more than three years. They recorded every drive, every turn, every gear shift. The goal: to see if everyday driving behavior could "witness" early changes in the brain.

As the researchers point out, driving combines many cognitive and motor functions, acting as a true indicator of everyday functioning in old age. In other words, the way we drive can “betray” changes in our brains long before they show up on standard tests./CNA
