On the eve of the holidays/ WHO: No level of alcohol is safe for our consumption

With the official start of the holiday season, it's inevitable that we won't be thinking about the glass of champagne to celebrate the New Year, the glass of mulled wine to warm up at the Christmas markets, or a glass of beer to raise a toast with old friends.

But the eternal question remains: how much should we drink? And is any drink harmful to our health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that, when it comes to alcohol, no level of alcohol is safe for our consumption.

The health agency has classified alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, the highest risk group, which ranks alongside asbestos, radiation and tobacco.

The European Union is the subregion with the highest alcohol consumption in the world, and where cancer is now also the leading cause of death, according to the WHO.

A recent study by the American Heart Association suggested that light drinking poses no risk for coronary heart disease, stroke, or heart failure. It even said that low amounts of alcohol may reduce the risk of coronary artery disease.

However, the American Association states that if you don't drink alcohol, don't start. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit your consumption.

The WHO adds that, while some studies suggest that moderate alcohol drinking has no effect or even a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, all the evidence together does not support benefits for the general population. /CNA
