The curly pelican returns to the waters of Lake Prespa e Madhe. The curly pelican is one of the largest flying birds, one of the most unique that exists in Prespa. It seems that its number has been significantly reduced compared to 2022 due to the decline in bird flu. The field specialist, Vasil Mele, has shown that during the survey carried out in the lakes of Prespa e Madhe, they found 50 pelicans, compared to 495 in previous years.

"We are in front of a fact that is discussed about the curly pelican which is one of the largest flying birds that exists. Its presence in the lakes of Prespa can be said since the spring of 2022, it has been reduced to a large extent due to the decline of bird flu, and at the moment after the curly pelican nests there, and when it arrives in Prespa, Greece, it has lost a number considerable number of pelicans. The first year after the fall of the birds, I can say that it has become extremely rare and the presence in the lakes of Prespa has been very low. From the census we conducted in the lakes of Prespa e Madhe, we found about 50 pelicans, when before the fall of bird flu around May 5-6, we counted about 495 individuals in one day. So we are looking at a mass reduction of this bird," said Vasil Mele.

Fortunately, the curly pelican is being noticed to have an increase in these lakes recently.

"To this day, the number has been increasing, due to the emergence of new individuals, and the number is increasing.

Prespa's reservoir and lakes are a habitat for a considerable number of birds, mainly waterfowl. These birds have been growing, their number is increasing. If we refer to the census of wintering birds, I can say that their number has decreased, but as species the presence has been there. This is also due to the global warming that has come to these ecosystems", said Mele.
