US President Donald Trump is hosting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House today for talks on trade tensions with the EU.
She is the first European leader to visit Washington since Trump imposed 20% tariffs on EU goods earlier this month. The tariffs have now been suspended for 90 days, giving the EU and the US a chance to negotiate.
Trump and Meloni will meet in the Oval Office at 6:00 PM European time.
The two leaders enjoy a good relationship. At this difficult moment, Meloni is considered one of the current EU leaders most suitable to speak to Trump.
In a sign of the closer relationship between Meloni and Trump, the Italian prime minister was the only EU leader to attend Donald Trump's inauguration earlier this year.
