Zelensky's request to President Trump: Come, visit Ukraine!

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked his US counterpart Donald Trump to visit his country to better understand the devastation caused by the Russian invasion.

"Please, before any kind of decision, any kind of form of negotiations, come and see people, civilians, fighters, hospitals, churches, destroyed or dead children," Zelensky said.

Zelensky made his request in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" broadcast on Sunday.

"With a visit to Ukraine, Trump will understand what Putin did," Zelensky said, among other things.

Zelensky's invitation comes after their last meeting at the White House in late February with President Trump and US Vice President JD Vance.

Vance said at the time that Ukraine was hosting foreign leaders on propaganda tours to gain support.

Zelensky reiterated his denial of the allegation and told CBS that if Trump chooses to visit Ukraine, "we will not prepare anything. It will not be theater."

"You can go exactly where you want, to any city that has been under attack," Zelensky said.

Trump is pushing for a quick end to the more than three-year-old war, with the United States holding direct talks with Russia despite its relentless attacks on Ukraine.

Washington has also held talks with Ukrainian officials about a possible ceasefire, while European countries are discussing a military deployment to reinforce any ceasefire in Ukraine./CNA
