Trump warns of new tariffs?

US President Donald Trump has warned that "nobody is getting off the hook for unfair trade balances", suggesting that further tariffs could be expected.

The White House had previously exempted smartphones and computers from import taxes to China, but in a post on Truth Social, he suggested that this would be short-lived, saying they would simply "move on to another tariff package."

Chinese officials called on Trump to "completely cancel" the tariffs, urging him to take a "major step to correct his mistakes."

Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Vietnam as part of a trip to key economies in Southeast Asia, in what has been described as an "offensive" in the region.

Beijing will undoubtedly seek to strengthen ties with its neighbors as a trade "war" with the US escalates.

Trump's tariff decision last week caused major volatility in global financial markets and raised fears about the impact on global trade. / CNA
