Trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague nears end

In two years, over 125 witnesses invited by the Specialized Prosecution have given their testimonies regarding the charges against the former KLA leaders. Now that the Prosecution is running out of time to prove its charges, the future of the trial is uncertain.

In October 2020, indictments for war crimes and crimes against humanity were confirmed against four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi are accused of having been part of a "joint criminal enterprise" that targeted those it considered "collaborators" and "traitors" to "gain power" during and after the last war in Kosovo.

The defendants' lawyers have denied all charges against their clients, arguing that the KLA did not have an efficient command structure.

At the time of the indictment, Thaçi had been president of Kosovo; Veseli, chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK); Selimi, MP and leader of the parliamentary group of the Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV); and Krasniqi, former speaker of the Kosovo Assembly.

The four, according to the Prosecution, held high positions during the time covered by the indictment./ REL
