Asylum policy/Kosovo on the EU list as a safe country

The EU Commission is proposing to expand the list of safe countries of origin by seven more countries. Asylum seekers from these countries will not be able to successfully apply for asylum in EU countries in the future.

The EU Commission has published a list of seven countries that are now considered safe countries of origin. The list includes Kosovo, India, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Asylum applications from people coming from these countries could in future be processed in EU member states under an accelerated procedure, as they have a low chance of being granted asylum.

Each application is reviewed individually.

According to the EU Commission, the accelerated procedure should take a maximum of three months. Member States must, however, examine each asylum application individually, regardless of whether the person comes from a country of origin classified as safe or from another country. The list applies to all EU Member States, but does not replace national lists. Of the seven new countries assessed as safe by the EU Commission, none is currently on the list of the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

The Commission further stated that candidate countries for EU membership are considered safe countries of origin. However, there are exceptions for countries where "unbridled violence" prevails against a backdrop of armed conflict, against which the EU has imposed sanctions - or even if the admission quota is more than 20 percent for asylum seekers from that country.

Asylum reform enters into force in June 2026

Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi hailed the list as a "success" for his government. Rome has repeatedly called for stricter restrictions on migration to the EU. The EU parliament and member states must approve the list. The EU agreed last year to reform the Common European Asylum System. The reform will enter into force in June 2026./ DW
