Trump and Erdogan hold phone conversation/ What the two counterparts discussed

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with his American counterpart Donald Trump, where they discussed developments in Syria and Gaza.

The call comes as Syria's Turkish-backed government announced a ceasefire with US-allied Kurdish forces after days of fighting.

"President Erdogan said that Turkey is closely following developments in Syria, that the unity, harmony and territorial integrity of Syria are important to Turkey ," the Turkish presidency said in a statement.

The Syrian government this week captured territory in the country's northeast and gave the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) a four-day deadline to agree to integrate into central state structures. The SDF's main ally, the United States, said the nature of its partnership with the group had changed since the emergence of Syria's new government.

The Turkish presidency added that Erdogan and Trump also discussed the fight against the Islamic State jihadist group and the situation of its detainees in Syrian prisons. Turkey considers the SDF a terrorist organization linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

According to the Turkish presidency statement, Erdogan told Trump that Turkey would continue to coordinate with Washington on Gaza.

"President Erdogan thanked US President Donald Trump for the invitation to the Gaza Peace Council ," the statement further said.

Earlier, Turkey said Erdogan would decide soon whether to join the initiative. Turkey has criticized Israel's offensive in Gaza, calling it genocide, while Israel has consistently opposed a possible role for Turkey in Gaza.

Meanwhile, among those the White House has appointed to the council are US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. /CNA
