The latest poll shows a close race between Republican Trump and Democrat Harris

In the United States, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, have the same level of support in the final weeks of the election, according to a national poll conducted by the New York Times newspaper and Siena University.

According to the poll released Sunday, Mr. Trump is one percentage point ahead of Ms. Harris, 48% to 47%, a difference that is within the polls' statistical margin of error.

Although Mr Trump's campaign had a difficult few weeks after Democratic President Joe Biden withdrew from the race in July, the latest poll shows he enjoys strong support from his base.

The poll clearly shows that voters feel they need to get to know Ms. Harris better, while their opinions of Mr. Trump are largely determined.

In the poll, 28% of likely voters said they needed more information about the Democratic nominee, while only 9% said the same about Mr. Trump.

The poll shows that Tuesday's presidential debate could be a turning point. Vice President Harris will have a chance to give more details about her policies when she faces former President Trump for 90 minutes.

The race is so close that even a slight increase in support for either candidate would be significant. Since Ms. Harris replaced Mr. Biden as the Democratic nominee over the summer, she has campaigned intensively but has had limited media interviews.

The findings of the latest poll are similar to those of a previous poll by the New York Times and the University of Siena, published in late July. Polls in the seven states that could determine the outcome of the election have also consistently shown a very close race./ Voa
