Syria bans alcohol sales in Damascus bars and restaurants

Syrian authorities have banned the sale of alcohol in restaurants and bars in the capital, Damascus. The decision is seen as one of the clearest signs yet that the Islamist government is moving towards austerity measures since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by new President Ahmed al-Sarrah 15 months ago.

The decree, issued by the governor of Damascus, says that licenses for nightclubs and bars will be converted into cafe licenses. Alcohol will only be sold in sealed bottles, to be picked up from the store, and only in neighborhoods where the majority of residents are Christian.

Any store selling alcohol must be at least 75 meters away from places of worship and schools and 20 meters away from security facilities. Bar owners have three months to comply with the decision.

Many restaurants have already changed the way they serve alcohol since the Islamist rebels took power. Some have removed beer from their menus or started serving alcoholic beverages in teacups./ CNA
