The war in Iran could push 45 million people into acute hunger by June, the World Food Programme has warned.
According to one analysis, tens of millions more people will face severe hunger if the war continues into the summer. US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which began on February 28, have blocked key humanitarian aid routes, delaying vital deliveries to the world.
Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme, said millions of people are expected to be pushed into acute hunger due to rising food, oil and transport prices, pushing the global total above the current record level of 319 million.
"This would drive global hunger levels to a historic record and is a terrifying prospect," Skau added.
Transportation costs have increased by 18% since the start of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and some routes have been forced to be diverted.
