Concerns over Iranian missiles/NATO deploys another Patriot system in southern

NATO is moving forward with the deployment of another US Patriot air defense system in Adana, southern Turkey, amid heightened concerns about missile threats from the war with Iran.

The news was announced by the Turkish Ministry of Defense. The new deployment concerns an area where the Incirlik base is located, which houses United States military personnel, as well as forces from Qatar, Spain and Poland, in addition to Turkish troops.

Turkey, which has the second-largest army in NATO and borders Iran, announced last week the deployment of a Patriot system in the province of Malatya, near an Alliance radar, as part of measures to strengthen air defense.

The Turkish Defense Ministry said that "in addition to national measures for the security of our airspace and citizens, an additional Patriot system is being deployed in Adana, which was put into operation by the Allied Air Command in Ramstein, Germany, complementing the Spanish Patriot system already in place in the region."

Adana is a key strategic point, as it is home to Incirlik air base, which is used by allied forces for operations in the wider Middle East. At the same time, Ankara stresses that, despite efforts to develop indigenous systems, it still does not have a fully developed air defense shield.

As a result, it has relied on NATO systems deployed in the eastern Mediterranean. Since the start of the war, three missiles have been shot down, which Ankara claims were launched from Iran, reinforcing the need to further defend the region. /CNA
