US Senate to investigate Trump's intelligence team over Iran war

US senators are set to hold a key national security hearing, about three weeks after the start of the conflict between the US and Iran. The annual hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee will focus mainly on the war in the Middle East, which has claimed thousands of lives and shaken global markets.

Lawmakers from both parties have demanded more transparency from President Donald Trump's administration, stressing that Congress has not been sufficiently informed about a conflict that has cost billions of dollars.

Key intelligence figures, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, are expected to testify at the hearing. Particular attention will be paid to the recent resignation of Joe Kent, who publicly opposed the war, saying Iran did not pose an immediate threat.

The White House administration has rejected these claims, calling them untrue.

Meanwhile, Republicans and Democrats remain divided. Senator Tom Cotton has called the military campaign "very successful" and expressed confidence that the US will achieve its objectives against Iran, including weakening its nuclear program.

On the other hand, Democratic Senator Mark Warner has called the conflict a "war of choice," arguing that there was no immediate threat to the US or Israel.

The hearing is expected to shed light on the administration's decision-making and intelligence warnings before the conflict escalated./ CNA
