US, Japan, Australia plan joint exercises in South China Sea

The United States, Japan and Australia plan to hold a joint exercise this week in the South China Sea, off the western part of the Philippines, Philippine security officials said. They added that the exercises are a show of force intended to underline the commitment of these countries to the rule of law in the region, after the aggressive approaches recently witnessed by China in the disputed waters.

On August 5, Chinese coast guard vessels used pressurized water against Philippine vessels sailing in the corridor, where disputes have long been seen as a potential flashpoint for tensions between the US and China in the region. The Chinese coast guard acknowledged that its ships used the water, adding that Beijing will continue to take the necessary measures to resolutely protect its territorial sovereignty.

The exercise between the United States, Japan and Australia will involve three aircraft carriers and helicopters. After the offshore exercises, their commanders will meet with their Philippine counterparts in Manila, the two Philippine officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press.

The United States plans to send the aircraft carrier USS America to the region, Japan will send one of its largest warships, the JS Izumo, while the Royal Australian Navy will send the helicopter carrier HMAS Canberra. Philippine officials said the joint exercise was planned several months ago.

The Philippines will not be part of this week's exercises due to military logistical constraints, but is open to participating in the future.

The United States, Japan and Australia have expressed immediate support for the Philippines as well as concern over China's actions.

After the August 5 incident, Washington reiterated its warning that it will be obliged to defend its old ally if civilian ships or Philippine troops are attacked with gunfire in the South China Sea./VOA
