Meteorologists: "Hurricane Hilary", a threat to people

"Hurricane Hilary, which is heading for the Pacific coast of Mexico, has weakened but could still cause 'life-threatening' flooding", American meteorologists warn.

With winds of up to 100 mph (175 km/h), it is a Category 1 storm, the National Hurricane Center says.

The NHC is already reporting heavy rain in parts of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and the US Southwest.

Hilary will weaken to a tropical storm before reaching southern California.

This would be the first tropical storm to hit the US state in more than 80 years.

In its latest update at 9 p.m. Saturday, the NHC says the hurricane is now approximately 459 km south-east of the westernmost point of Baja California's Punta Eugenia.

"Hilary appears to be weakening quickly," John Cangialosi, a senior hurricane specialist at the NHC, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency on Saturday.

Hilary was previously a powerful Category 3 storm with winds of up to 130 mph.

Rainfall could reach 10 in (25 cm) in some areas of southern California and southern Nevada, the NHC says. "Dangerous to catastrophic floods are expected", he adds.

In San Diego, the National Weather Service (NWS) earlier issued a "high potential" flash flood warning. Nearly 26 million people in the southwestern US were under a flood watch.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had "personnel and supplies pre-positioned in the region.

"I urge everyone to take precautions and listen to instructions from state and local officials," he said./ CNA
