Ukraine's defenses have shot down 15 Russian drones during an attack overnight on August 18, Kyiv's Air Force said on Saturday.

It said 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the Russian airstrike, but did not specify what happened to the other two.

Russian forces "attacked from the north with unmanned drones of the Shahed-136/131 type. A total of 17 attack drones were launched from the Kursk region," the Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram.

Air defense was activated in the "northern and central regions, as well as in the western regions".

"Fifteen enemy drones were destroyed by the forces and means of the Air Force in cooperation with the air defense systems of other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine," she said.

Both sides in the conflict - which began in February 2022 - have recently reported regular drone strikes from the air and sea, at a time when Ukraine is waging a counter-offensive aimed at retaking territory controlled by Russia.

Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine's Black Sea and Danube ports since Moscow pulled out of an agreement that allowed grain to be safely exported through the shipping hub.

On Friday, Russia said its forces destroyed Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and its Black Sea fleet.

On the front line, Ukrainian forces moved to the eastern coast of the Russian-occupied Kherson region and took up positions there, the Russian-appointed governor of the region confirmed.
