Stolen British Museum treasures worth £50,000 were flogged on eBay for just £40, it has been revealed.
An antiquities expert told the museum three years ago that they suspected a member of staff was stealing the items - which had appeared on the auction site since 2016.
An internal investigation led to the museum sacking Peter Higgs, 56, a curator of Mediterranean cultures who had been with them for more than 30 years, reports The Telegraph.
Police are now investigating the thefts, while the museum faces criticism for how the organized robbery went on for so long.
Former chancellor George Osborne, chairman of the museum, has commissioned an independent review to determine which objects were taken, how they can be recovered and future safeguards implemented, the Daily Mail reports .
A spokesman for the British Museum said: "We have carried out a full investigation, identified the person we believe is responsible and that person has been sacked. We are also taking further robust action to ensure this never happens again. / CNA
