Iran's security forces have arrested nine women's rights activists in several cities in the northern province of Gilan.

This development comes at a time when the authorities are continuing the crackdown on the eve of the first anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amin, who died while in custody on suspicion of violating the rules on wearing the hijab, or headscarf.

Among those arrested on August 16 are: Mateen Yazdani, Forough Sami'nia, Yasmin Hashdari, Jelve Javaheri, Zahra Dadras, Negin Rezaei, Shiva ShahSiah, and Vahehdeh KhoshSirat, activists announced through social networks.

The reasons for their arrest or the location of those arrested have not yet been made public and officials have not yet commented on the matter.

Speaking to Radio Free Europe's Farda, women's rights advocate Mansoureh Shojaee said the arrest of the activists appeared to be part of a wider strategy by the Islamic leadership to manage the first anniversary of Amin's death on September 16. She emphasized that most of those arrested, including Javaheri, Sami'nia and Yazdani, have been activists for women's rights for more than two decades.

At least 500 people have been killed since protests erupted following the death of Amin, an Iranian-Kurdish woman who was arrested while visiting Tehran. She was arrested on suspicion of violating Islamic dress codes.

The protests began in response to the brutal enforcement of legislation on the compulsory wearing of the headscarf, but soon turned into the largest protests since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

Officials have blamed the West for fueling the protests and vowed to crack down even harder on the protests.

Several thousand people have been arrested, including journalists, lawyers, activists, etc./ Rel
