A senior general who briefly headed Russia's armed forces in Ukraine last year died on Wednesday.

The news was reported by the Russian media , while it was later confirmed by the authorities.

Mikhail Degtyarev, the governor of Russia's Far Eastern Khabarovsk region, said General Gennady Zhidko died in Moscow after a long battle with an illness.

"The loss of Zhidko's life at the age of 57 does not seem suspicious, as he was suffering from a tumor," said journalist Dmitry Kolezev, citing an anonymous source.

The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Zhidko earlier this year as a key member of the Russian Armed Forces.

This, after Zhidko oversaw the implementation of an order to deploy Russian minors to the war front in Ukraine. 

The general was put in charge of Russian forces in Ukraine in late May 2022. He was quietly replaced in July 2022 "for failures during military operations," according to the BBC's Russian service. 

Months later, Russian forces were expelled from the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine and the Kherson region in the south of the country. 

Before leading the war in Ukraine, Zhidko oversaw Russian troops in Syria from 2016-2018 and ideological allegiance as deputy defense minister from 2021-2022. He was awarded the title Hero of Russia - the country's highest title - by President Vladimir Putin in 2017./ CNA
