Mayor of Moscow: About 45,000 Muscovites are fighting in Ukraine

Tens of thousands of Muscovites are participating in military operations in Ukraine, said the mayor of Russia's capital, Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin.

Such a statement rarely comes from Russian officials, who do not speak in numbers about the war.

"Forty-five thousand Muscovites are fighting in the area of ??the special military operation", said Sobyanin, according to the Russian news agency, Interfax, while referring to the war in Ukraine.

According to him, about 5,000 of them are professional soldiers.

In early August, the deputy chairman of Russia's National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said that Russia has increased its additional military personnel to 230,000 this year alone.

In September of last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an order for partial military mobilization, calling for an additional 300,000 men to be committed to the war.

The decision - which marks the first Russian mobilization since World War II - has shocked the country, as thousands of men have been drafted into the army and many more have fled the country.

Not ready to issue a second mobilization order, Moscow has launched a major campaign, attempting to lure the Russians through financial offers.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last year that the Russian army will have 1.5 million soldiers as Moscow continues its war in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
