British maritime agency warns of hostile action in Hormuz

The threat level to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has been raised to severe by the United Kingdom Merchant Marine Operations (UKMTO).

The agency says "deliberate hostile actions" are possible under current conditions in the vital waterway - through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes.

He adds that commercial traffic through the waterway is continuing at reduced levels through two separate routes, a southern corridor near Oman and a northern route near the Iranian coast.

Our colleagues at BBC Verify previously reported that Iran has been blamed for five attacks on ships using the route through the Strait via Omani waters, recommended by the US military.

Iran has tried to establish control over the strait and has demanded that ships follow a government-approved route near the Gulf coast.
