Fire in a shoe factory / Victims reported

A fire at a shoe factory in southeastern China left four people dead on Thursday, state broadcaster CCTV reported, as firefighters worked to put out the flames and rescue people trapped inside.

The fire broke out around noon (0400 GMT) on Thursday in the city of Jinjiang in Fujian province, with several people trapped on the roof, CCTV said. It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured.

Footage released from security cameras showed flames engulfing the multi-story factory and thick black smoke rising into the sky. Several people, apparently trapped by the flames, could be seen on the roof as smoke swirled around them.

Firefighting efforts were still ongoing, although the flames had been largely extinguished by around 5:40 p.m. (09:40 GMT), a local fire official told CCTV. Fire and rescue teams sent 183 people and 35 vehicles to the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire started on the ground floor of the factory, a local official told CCTV. Shoe manufacturing materials stored in the building were highly flammable and could have caused the flames to spread rapidly, the official said.

Due to the materials and adhesives present, the smell at the scene was quite strong, causing eye irritation, CCTV said. Jinjiang, in the coastal province of Fujian, is a major shoe and clothing manufacturing center and is often called the "shoe capital" of China.
