Church burned in Pakistan, after accusations against some Christians of blasphemy

Thousands of Muslims have burned at least four churches and vandalized the homes of Christians in the Pakistani city of Jaranwala after claims that two men desecrated the Koran, Islam's holy book.

Police have detained more than 100 people and launched investigations into the violence that occurred in eastern Punjab.

The authorities have said that the situation in Jaranvala is tense.

Reuters news agency said police had also opened a case against two Christian residents under the blasphemy law, which carries death penalties.

So far no one has been executed under the law, but dozens of people have been killed in the past by mobs if they were accused of blasphemy.

Two years ago, a Sri Lankan man was killed by an angry mob, accused of blasphemy, and his body burned.

In 2009, mobs burned about 60 houses and killed six people in the Punjab region after they were accused of insulting Islam.

The penal law for blasphemy dates back to the 19th century when Pakistan was a British colony.

But in the 1980s, the authorities introduced stricter penalties for breaking the law, including the death penalty for anyone who offends Islam.

About 96 percent of Pakistan's population is Muslim.

Other countries, including Iran, Brunei and Mauritania, also have harsh punishments for insulting religion./ REL
