Biden meeting with the leaders of Japan and South Korea

Amid growing concerns over the actions of China and North Korea, President Joe Biden will host the leaders of Japan and South Korea on Friday at the Camp David presidential resort near the US capital. The high-level meeting is expected to result in joint initiatives on defense, technology and economic security, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between Washington and its two Asian allies.

North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, increasing Chinese military presence in the Indo-Pacific and deepening ties between Moscow and Beijing provide a clear picture of the trilateral meeting between the United States, Japan and South Korea.

After their May meeting in Japan, the leaders will hold talks on Friday at the Camp David presidential resort near Washington, where many foreign leaders have been hosted in the past.

"You will see some very concrete measures that we are taking to increase the capacity to strengthen the security of our three countries and beyond, security for the Indo-Pacific region," said  US top diplomat Antony Blinken.

The measures are expected to include an improved early warning system against North Korea's missiles, curbing nuclear threats, increased military exercises and cyber security cooperation.

It is a remarkable milestone in the historically complicated relationship between Seoul and its former colonizer, Tokyo.

"Korea and Japan are now partners who share universal values ??and common interests," says South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

At the center of the talks is expected to be cooperation to block semiconductor exports to China as well as other economic security issues.

"China opposes the formation of cliques of all kinds by relevant countries, as well as their practices of exacerbating confrontation and jeopardizing the strategic security of other countries,"  Chinese diplomatic spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

Friday's meeting is central to President Biden's efforts for a more institutionalized cooperation that will continue despite changes in the leadership of the three allied countries in the future. / VOA
