The Taliban ban political parties after declaring them un-Islamic

Afghanistan's hardline rulers, the Taliban, have banned all political parties, saying they have "no justification" under Islamic Sharia Law.

"Political parties are completely banned. We will not allow any political party to operate in the state," said Abdul Hakim Sharaee, the Taliban's de-facto minister of justice.

He made this announcement on August 16, a day after the Taliban marked the second anniversary of their return to power and the withdrawal of international troops from the country.

The Taliban seized power on August 15, 2021, as US and NATO forces withdrew from the country after two decades of war. To mark the anniversary, Tuesday was declared a public holiday. Women, mostly banned from public life, did not participate in the celebrations.

In the southern city of Kandahar, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban, military personnel posed with armored vehicles. Young people rode through the city on bicycles, motorbikes and cars, waving flags and brandishing weapons.
