Crying in the courtroom/ The British nurse is found guilty of murdering 7 babies

A British nurse has been found guilty of killing seven newborns and attempting to kill six others at a neonatology hospital where she worked.

Lucy Letby, 33, has faced trial since October last year. She was accused of injecting the victims - babies who were either sick or born prematurely - with air, overfeeding them with milk and poisoning them with insulin.

She was found guilty in a series of partial verdicts, handed down days apart, with the judge imposing reporting restrictions until the end of the trial.

Letby was also found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder.

Letby cried during some of the verdicts, while the families of her victims sobbed and comforted each other as the jury read its findings. One juror also cried and held her head in her hands.

During the trial, the testimonies of the nurse's colleagues were also heard, who said that they had noticed that Letby had been at work in every case when the newborn babies had died.

Letby had been arrested and released twice. She was arrested for the third time in 2020 and has been in prison ever since.

During searches of her home, police found hospital documents and notes written by Letby herself. In one of the writings it was said: "I am evil, I have done this".

Letby later claimed that this note was made after he was transferred to do administrative work after the deaths of the two triplets.

The nurse denied the allegations and suggested that a "gang" of four doctors were trying to blame her for the hospital's failings in the care of the babies.

Britain has faced cases in the past where doctors have killed their patients. The most famous case is that of the doctor Harold Shipman, who in 2000 was convicted of murdering 15 patients.

Shipman was later found to have killed 250 patients by injecting them with morphine. He killed himself in prison in 2004./ CNA
