The Taliban ban political parties after declaring them un-Islamic

Afghanistan's hardline rulers, the Taliban, have banned all political parties, saying they have "no justification" under Islamic Sharia Law.

"Political parties are completely banned. We will not allow any political party to operate in the state," said Abdul Hakim Sharaee, the Taliban's de-facto minister of justice.

He made this announcement on August 16, a day after the Taliban marked the second anniversary of their return to power and the withdrawal of international troops from the country.

"Political parties have no justification in Islamic Sharia Law and they are not in the best interest of our country," he added, noting that political parties have been the key factor causing unrest in Afghanistan for decades.

The ban is the latest in a series of restrictions imposed by the Taliban on political activities, as dozens of political parties were registered when the militants were ousted from power in 2001.

Since returning to power in 2021, ultra-conservative militants have monopolized power, handing all top government posts to Taliban leaders while destroying democratic institutions.

No country has so far officially recognized the Taliban administration, as the militants since returning to power have imposed harsh restrictions on basic freedoms, from banning girls and women from being educated to declaring music illegal. Rel
