The US sanctions four Russians in connection with the poisoning of Navalny

The United States has imposed sanctions on four Russians accused of being involved in the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

Navalny, who is currently in a prison in Russia, was poisoned in 2020.

The US Treasury Department said the four sanctioned individuals are believed to be linked to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

"Today we remind [Russian President] Vladimir Putin and his regime that there are consequences not only for launching a brutal and unprovoked war against Ukraine, but also for violating the human rights of the Russian people," the undersecretary of the Treasury said. for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson in a statement.

"The assassination attempt on Alexei Navalny in 2020 represents the Kremlin's contempt for human rights. We will continue to use the authority at our disposal to hold potential Kremlin henchmen accountable," he added.

Navalny, who has been organizing mass protests in Russia since 2010, was arrested in January 2021 after returning from Germany. He had been treated in Germany for what Western doctors said was poisoning with a Soviet-era nerve agent.

Navalny has accused the Kremlin of being behind the poisoning, but the Kremlin has denied these claims./ Rel
