Iran's top diplomat meets with the Saudi leader

Iran's foreign minister met with Saudi Arabia's de facto leader on Aug. 18, in his first visit since the Middle Eastern rivals announced a sudden improvement in relations, officials said.

Iranian Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who traveled to Riyadh a day earlier, held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced.

The two officials discussed the relations between the countries, "the possibilities for cooperation in the future and ways to develop them, as well as discussed the developments regarding the regional and international situation", the Saudi ministry said through a post on X, which once again it was known as "Twitter".

Iran's state news agency IRNA said Hossein Amir-Abdollahian is the first senior Iranian official to meet the Saudi Crown Prince.

Shiite-majority Iran and Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia severed ties in 2016. But the two countries restored ties after reaching an agreement in March brokered by China.

The achievement of this agreement prompted optimism, as these two countries had supported different parties in conflict zones in the Middle East, including in Yemen, for years.

On Thursday, Iranian Minister Amir-Abdollahian said that "progress in our reports is going in the right direction."

The Iranian chief diplomat mentioned cooperation in the economic and security fields, but did not announce any new agreements.

Since the March agreement, Saudi Arabia has intensified efforts to achieve peace in Yemen, holding direct talks with Houthi rebel leaders in Yemen's Sana'a. Likewise, Riyadh has managed to return Syria - Iran's ally - to the Arab League./ REL
