Fires in Canada / Thousands of people evacuated

Firefighters are continuing to work to keep open the only route out of the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories. The fires have spread very close to the city where 20,000 residents live, who are continuing to evacuate.

Firefighting aircraft have been working continuously to keep the highway in Yellowstone open while residents are evacuated.

Authorities are using water cannons and other means to prevent the fires from engulfing the city. Wildfires have spread 15 kilometers near the city.

Winds blowing from the northwest, along with light rain, have complicated firefighting efforts. Emergency officials said the fires could reach the city over the weekend.

"We are facing a critical few days," said Shane Thompson, government minister for the Northwest Territories.

Hundreds of kilometers south of Yellowstone, houses have been burned as a result of fires. Residents have already been ordered to leave their homes as the fires spread further.

Emergency services said a fire has spread to 68 square kilometers.

Thousands of people have already left their homes as there are close to 100 fires in the Northwest Territories.

These are the worst wildfires in Canadian history.

This state has faced a record number of fires this year, which have burned over 137,000 square kilometers across the country, said the Canadian Center for Forest Fires.

As of Friday morning, over 1,000 wildfires were active across the country and over half of them are estimated to be out of control./ REL
