US offers more legal protections to Ukrainian refugees

The administration of US President Joe Biden announced on August 18 a major expansion of the legal status for temporary stay of Ukrainians already living in the United States who fled after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

The decision is expected to enable 166,700 Ukrainians to gain Temporary Protected Status, out of a total of 26,000, the Interior Department said. To qualify for this status, Ukrainians must prove they were in the US by August 16, two days before this announcement. This decision enables them to obtain authorization to work in the US.

The temporary status was originally intended to be in effect until October 19, 2023, but has been extended for 18 months, namely until April 19, 2025.

"The ongoing Russian occupation of Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis it has caused require the US to continue to provide protection and security to Ukrainians who cannot return to their country," said US Secretary of the Interior Alejandro Mayorkas. .

On Friday, the US also extended Temporary Protected Status to Sudanese who have been in the US until April 16. Washington said the April clashes in Sudan had fueled instability.

It is estimated that another 2,750 Sudanese will be able to benefit from this status, bringing the total number of Sudanese citizens benefiting from this status to 3,950.

Otherwise, Ukrainian immigrants are located all over the USA, and the largest number of them are located in the metropolitan areas of New York, Chicago, Seattle, Sacramento and California./ REL
