Greek authorities rescue nearly 60 migrants in the Aegean Sea

Greek authorities rescued about 60 migrants on Saturday who were trying to cross from Turkey to the eastern Aegean islands in rafts, the Greek Coast Guard said.

The number of migrants who have arrived in Greece on such boats provided by traffickers has increased significantly in recent weeks.

The Coast Guard said in a media release on August 19 that one of its patrol vessels found 41 people on a dinghy near the island of Lesbos. They were evacuated and taken to a reception center on the island.

After a chase on Saturday morning, a coastguard patrol boat stopped another dinghy carrying 17 people near the Arkii Islands in the eastern Aegean. The migrants were taken to the island of Patmos, until one of them was arrested on suspicion of belonging to the trafficking ring.

Greek officials have blamed conflicts in Africa for the surge in migrants, which has increased pressure on key trafficking routes in Europe, as well as on a growing black market industry in Turkey that makes rubber rafts. low quality. Good summer sailing conditions have contributed to increased numbers of migrants as well.

Greece's government says it has not changed its policy on intercepting ships at sea, which had significantly reduced the number of migrants in recent years.

Human rights groups accuse Greece of carrying out illegal summer deportations to Turkey of people who manage to reach Greek shores. Athens strongly denies this./ REL
