Backers of Niger's junta were forced on Saturday to halt a registration of people willing to volunteer for non-military roles in defense against a possible intervention by West African powers.
Thousands of mostly young people gathered outside a stadium in the capital Niamey, hours before the event was scheduled to start - a sign of strong support in some quarters for the junta, which has defied international pressure to surrender since it was toppled on July 26. President Mohamed Bazoum from office.
Organizers of the recruitment drive in Niamey said they did not intend to enlist volunteers for the army, but rather to gather a list of people willing to lend their civilian skills.
An ECOWAS delegation flew to Niamey on Saturday to hold talks with the junta, indicating that efforts to resolve the standoff peacefully are still underway.
The level of support for the junta across Niger has been hard to gauge, but thousands attended an earlier rally at the stadium on August 11 and applauded the coup leaders' pledge to stand up to the bloc. / CNA
