Russia reports 'abnormal situation' on Luna-25 spacecraft

Russia has reported an "abnormal situation" on its moon-bound spacecraft, which launched earlier this month.

Luna-25 is an unmanned robot and the country's first mission to the lunar surface in almost 50 years.

It aims for a historic landing at the moon's south pole on Monday, but appears to have run into unspecified trouble.

The Russian space agency, Roskosmos, said its specialists were analyzing the situation.

No further details were given.

It comes a week after the spacecraft's data collection equipment ignited following its launch from Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome in the country's far eastern Amur region.

Russia is racing against India to make an ambitious landing on the moon's south pole, with its rival having launched its Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander last month. Space agencies like NASA have previously discovered frozen water in craters in the area, but no country has ever gone there./ CNA
