China has softened its tone about the danger posed by COVID-19 and is easing some restrictions even as the number of daily cases is near record highs.

This development follows protests that have swept the country, an expression of public anger, over the harsh restrictive measures linked to the pandemic.

Some cities, even as they are reporting new infections, are lifting restrictions and allowing businesses to reopen.

Health authorities announced the easing of measures but made no mention of the protests, which have ranged from peaceful gatherings in Beijing to clashes with police on the streets of Guangzhou.
