The United Nations has predicted that a record 339 million people will need humanitarian assistance next year.
The UN Office for Emergency Relief (OCHA) is asking donor countries for about $51.5 billion, an increase of 25 percent, compared to the beginning of 2022.
"The need for humanitarian aid is very high, as the extreme events of this year will leave their mark in 2023," said the UN aid coordinator, Martin Griffiths.
“Droughts and floods are wreaking havoc in Pakistan and Africa. The war in Ukraine has turned part of Europe into a battlefield. More than 100 million people are displaced worldwide. And all this is accompanied by the devastation that the coronavirus pandemic has left behind in the poorest countries in the world."
OCHA has said that at least 22 million people in 54 countries face severe food insecurity, while 45 million people in 37 countries are at risk of facing hunger.
Climate change, health needs and gender inequality are making the situation even more difficult, said the UN./REL
