UN: Nearly 800 killed near aid centers in Gaza

According to OHCHR data, 798 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip over the past 10 weeks while trying to receive humanitarian aid.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reports that since the end of May, at least 798 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip while trying to receive aid.

According to OHCHR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani, 615 of these deaths were recorded in or near humanitarian aid distribution centers operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by the US and Israel.

Cruel crimes

Ravina Shamdasan said OHCHR is particularly concerned about "atrocious crimes being committed where people are queuing to receive vital aid, such as food."

"Nearly 800 people have been killed while trying to get aid," she said. "And most of the injured have gunshot wounds," she added.

Another 183 people have been killed "apparently near aid convoys" of the UN and other aid organizations in the Palestinian Territories, she told reporters in Geneva.

What is the role of the GHF?

The GHF operation, which has effectively paralyzed the UN's extensive aid distribution network in Gaza, has been accompanied by chaotic scenes and marred by almost daily reports of Israeli forces firing on civilians trying to receive aid.

Figures published by the UN speak of at least 10 more people who were killed on Friday near an aid distribution point in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip.

About 70 other people were injured during the incident, the Hamas-controlled Gaza health authority reported.
