New legal changes/ Portugal reclassifies rape as a public crime

The Portuguese parliament today reclassified rape as a public crime, giving authorities the power to investigate and prosecute cases without a formal complaint from the victim.

Proposals from the Bloco de Esquerda, LIVRE and PAN parties were approved with the support of the right-wing Social Democratic Party and Chega.

Under the new rules, witnesses can report rape and investigations can begin immediately, regardless of whether the victim wants to press charges.

Several Socialist Party deputies also voted in favor of the reclassification, despite their party's official abstention on several proposals.

The adopted law brings changes to the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Victim's Statute.

The change marks the end of Portugal's status as a separate country and brings it into line with other European countries./CNA
