Zelensky and Pope Leo XIV: Vatican, possible venue for peace talks on Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Pope Leo XIV discussed today the Vatican as a possible venue to host peace talks to end Russia's total occupation.

Zelensky held talks with the Pope at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo ahead of the fourth Ukraine Recovery Conference, which will take place on Thursday and Friday in Rome.

The Vatican said Pope Leo XIV and Zelenskyy discussed the conflict and the urgent need for a just and lasting peace.

"The Holy Father expressed his condolences for the victims and renewed his prayers and closeness to the Ukrainian people, encouraging every effort aimed at the release of prisoners and the search for common solutions. The Holy Father reiterated his readiness to welcome representatives of Russia and Ukraine to the Vatican for negotiations," a Vatican statement said.

The United States had hinted that the Vatican could organize possible peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, but Moscow has not accepted it.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Zelensky said he thanked the Pope for the Vatican's efforts to help reunite children taken from Russia after the occupation of Moscow in 2022./ CNA
