Ukraine says Russia carried out largest drone and missile attack of the war

Kiev said on Wednesday that Russia carried out its largest missile and drone attack during its more than three-year invasion of Ukraine, hitting mainly its west.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia attacked with 728 drones and 13 missiles, adding that Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted 711 drones, and that at least seven missiles were destroyed, AFP reports.

"This is a telling attack, which happened at the very time when so many efforts are being made to achieve peace, to achieve a ceasefire. But only Russia continues to undermine them," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media.

He called on allies to toughen sanctions on Russia, particularly by hitting its energy sector, a crucial revenue stream for Russia's war coffers.

"Our partners know how to apply pressure in a way that will force Russia to think about ending the war, not about carrying out new attacks," Zelensky added.

The prefect of the western city of Luck, Igor Polishchuk, said that fires broke out at an "enterprise", and that no one was reported killed or injured.

The latest attack surpassed the previous Russian record of 550 drones and missiles, launched earlier this month.

It occurred after the United States changed its position regarding reducing Ukraine's arms supply.

"Russia carried out this attack after the US publicly stated that it would supply us with weapons," the Ukrainian president's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said on social media./ REL
