Strong storms hit Central and Eastern Europe

After days of extreme heat, a powerful storm swept across parts of Central and Eastern Europe, causing widespread death and damage.

In northern Italy, a 63-year-old woman was killed near Milan when a tree fell during bad weather. Two municipal workers were injured while clearing debris overnight.

The storms come after a heatwave across the region, with scientists warning that climate change is increasing the frequency of such extreme events.

Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia and Serbia also faced devastating storms and fires.

Wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h in Slovakia tore off roofs and disrupted transportation. In Croatia, hail damaged the stadium and port of Split, while Serbia battled hundreds of fires./CNA
